READING: 1 Samuel 5-9

Samuel was a praying man. He was both the product of prayer (his mother Hannah’s) and an example of prayer (his own). In today’s reading, we find him approaching the Lord on behalf of the people who once again longed for the Lord and for His rescue from the Philistines. They had torn down their idols and worshiped the Lord alone, and Samuel interceded for them. They nevertheless still feared the Philistines when that enemy gathered against the Hebrews, and the people again pleaded with Samuel to keep praying for them. God then heard those prayers and delivered His people.

In fact, these basic, simple words from today’s reading give me hope again today: “He [Samuel] cried out to the Lord on behalf of Israel, and the Lord answered him” (1 Sam 7:9). It was just one man praying—just one man who sought to follow the Lord, and who had a relationship with Him. He just trusted the Lord, and the Lord delivered.

As I begin a new work week, I’m burdened over family and friends I want the Lord to deliver from the bondage of sin. I need to remember this week that it takes just one praying person to make a difference.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you that one praying person for someone else today?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, increase my faith as I pray to you.”

MONDAY’S READING: 1 Samuel 10-13
