04/04/23 A Changed Heart

READING: 1 Samuel 10-13

Samuel anointed Saul with oil and then told him several signs to come that would affirm his kingship. In one of the signs, for example, the Spirit of God would come on Saul and lead him to prophesy. What most grabs my attention today, though, are the words in 1 Samuel 10:9 (listed below in a few versions):

  • “God changed his heart” (CSB)
  • “God gave him another heart” (ESV)
  • “God gave him a new heart” (NLT)

The wording is different in each case, but the point remains the same: God did something in the heart of Saul as He prepared him for the throne. We don’t know exactly what God did—and Saul would certainly be disobedient in days to come—but this “would appear to be a reference to the Lord’s equipping Saul with the necessary disposition of mind and will to assume the responsibilities of kingship.”* The point again, though, is that God did something in Saul’s heart.

God still does that, you know. He still changes hearts. Amen.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you praying for God to change someone’s heart today? If so, keep believing!

DAILY PRAYER: “God, I’m pleading with you to move in the heart of the persons for whom I’m praying today.”

BIBLETOMORROW’S READING: 1 Samuel 14-15
