05/10/23 Listen and Obey

READING: 2 Kings 17-19

The Word of God is quite clear: there are consequences to our sin. It is the case that souls that sin will die (Gen 2:16-17, Ezek 18:20). We will indeed reap what we sow (Gal 6:7).

Today’s reading illustrates this truth in an undeniable way. Here, we read of this tragic moment for Israel: “In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria. He deported the Israelites to Assyria and settled them in Halah, along the Habor (Gozan’s river), and in the cities of the Medes” (2 Kgs 17:6). Then, the text tells us exactly why this deportation happened: “This disaster happened because the people of Israel sinned against the Lord their God who had brought them out of the land of Egypt from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt and because they worshiped other gods” (2 Kgs 17:7). Indeed, these words summarize where the people were: “They did not listen, and they did not obey” (2 Kgs 18:12).

God had provided for His people in powerful ways, but they had turned from Him—and thus brought judgment on themselves. We who are God’s people today need to remember this story. We really do need to listen to Him and obey His commands.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you listening to and obeying God?
