07/03/23 Answer Quickly!

READING: Psalms 68-75

Seldom do God’s calendar and clock match ours. Sometimes we face hardships in life—including, like the psalmist, others who fight against us—and we want God to answer our prayers quickly. Indeed, in our microwave world, we almost want God to answer our prayers before we ever finished praying them.

That makes sense, actually, when our soul is in anguish. The psalmist found himself in such a situation, with enemies standing against him. It felt like the floodwaters could sweep over him, but he sought God with zeal: “answer me,” “rescue me,” “don’t let me sink,” “turn to me” (Psa 69:13-16). More pointedly, he sought God’s help now: “Don’t hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly!” (Psa 69:17). His desperation led to his cry for a speedy reply—both here and again in Psalm 70:1—“God, hurry to rescue me. Lord, hurry to help me!”

God’s timing often demands that we wait, but trusting Him does not preclude us to praying for a quick answer. In the words of Matthew Henry, “Urgent trials should always awake fervent prayers.”*

DAILY PRAYER: “God, I do ask You to answer me quickly. Grant me faith to trust You in the meantime.”
