07/05/23 Night and Day

READING: Psalms 84-93

In a psalm that celebrates the Sabbath (Psalm 92), the psalmist begins with words that ought to help us start the day well: “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to your name, Most High,to declare your faithful love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, with a ten-stringed harp and the music of a lyre” (Psa 92:1-3).

It is indeed right and fitting for us to give thanks to the Lord. He has provided so much for us—most particularly, His willingness to make us His children—that we so often take for granted. It is further appropriate for us to sing God’s praises, for He grants us His faithful love in the morning and the evening; His love is steadfast and sure, enduring and patient. It is right for us to proclaim that love every day. Again today, I’m grateful for the summary words of Matthew Henry: “Let us give thanks every morning for the mercies of the night, and every night for the mercies of the day; going out, and coming in, let us bless God.”*

Let us bless Him, indeed, night and day. Amen.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Have you praised God yet today?

DAILY PRAYER: “Today I pray the words of the psalmist: ‘For you have made me rejoice, Lord, by what you have done; I will shout for joy because of the works of your hands.’” (Psa 92:4)

TOMORROW’S READING: Psalms 94-104
