12/01/23 Wood, Hay, or Stubble

READING: 1 Corinthians 2-7

It’s funny what I’ve found in my garage each time we’ve moved. Even recently, as I was cleaning out our garage, I found things like elementary school creations, junior high baseball trophies, high school academic awards, and college graduation tassels. Each of these things marked an accomplishment for me, and I had carried them with us for years—only to realize that none of that stuff really matters.

What brings honor today is often forgotten tomorrow. What seemed significant enough that we wanted everyone to know about it at the time later seems almost silly.

We learn—I think—through life that temporary stuff is just that: temporary. It’s all wood, hay, and stubble that will ultimately be destroyed in the fires of judgment (1 Cor 3:12-13). Only that which we do for God’s glory will last. Thus, the questions I ask myself today are these:

  • Did my actions yesterday reflect a life living for the temporary or the eternal?
  • How will I guard my heart today so I’m not attracted to the temporary?
  • Will I live today in such a way that I have rewards in eternity to give back to the Son who is the very foundation of life?

What are your answers to these questions?

PERSONAL REFLECTION: How do you guard against living for the temporary?

PRAYER: “Father, I want You to be pleased with what I do—in every case.”

MONDAY’S READING:  1 Corinthians 8-12
