READING: Hebrews 11-13, James 1
Every time I read Hebrews 13:17, I shudder a bit. That’s because I’m called to be a leader in God’s church, and the text calls leaders to “keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account.” To think that I will be accountable for the ways I care deeply for and guide those I lead is daunting. One writer has indicated, in fact, that the phrase, “keep watch” suggests “constant vigilance, wakefulness, or sleeplessness” – being ever alert to anything threatening believers.* Sometimes, in fact, pastors are much more concerned about their congregation’s spiritual well-being than the members are concerned about their own lives. That’s a weighty responsibility for under-shepherds.
In fact, this text reminds me of my pastors over the years who’ve watched out for my soul. They’ve faithfully preached the Word and called me to obedience. They’ve been unafraid to speak truth into my life. I know they’ve worked long hours, carried heavy burdens, and borne much responsibility. I fear I’ve never fully let them know how much I appreciated them, though, simply because I didn’t understand their responsibility at the time. This many years later, having walked in their shoes, I know how much I want them to have joy in their pastoral service.
I intend to say “thanks” to my pastor today. I challenge you to do the same.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you recognize your pastor’s responsibility?
PRAYER: “Father, thank You for those who lead our church.”
