12/29/23 Come, Lord Jesus!

READING: Revelation 18-22

First, here’s an important note about my 2024 plans for reading the Word and writing these devotions. This coming year, I will be following a plan that includes the Old Testament and the New Testament for five days each week. On Saturdays, I will offer a simple strategy or tip for walking with Christ faithfully. On Sundays, I will again this next year suggest ways to pray.

In addition, I will be offering two reading options: one for those who want to read the entire Bible next year, and one for those who prefer to read the Bible in two years. I will write the daily devotion based on the annual plan, but I will do my best to make application for those following the two-year plan as well. Thank you for joining me!

——————-

We’ve come to the end of another year’s reading plan. Like every year, this past year has carried its own joys and heartaches. The world has seen war and anguish. Refugees find themselves struggling throughout the world. Believers in various parts of the world have paid a price for their faith. The consequences of a fallen world continue to bring destruction and death. More personally, Pam’s two remaining aunts on her dad’s side passed away in just the last few months, and we face the reality now of an entire generation in our family no longer with us. No matter where we look, we see grief at some level—even for believers.

But . . . today’s reading points us to a day of celebration, of binding Satan and his forces, of the promise of resurrection, and of a glorious new creation. That day will come in God’s timing, but our task is to be faithful in the meantime. Even while we press on in faith together, however, the words of John echo in my own heart: “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!” (Rev 22:20). Perhaps they resound in your heart as well.

Indeed, do come, Lord Jesus! We long for your return.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you genuinely looking forward to the Lord’s return?

PRAYER: “Come, Lord Jesus.”

MONDAY’S READINGS:

One-year plan: Genesis 1-3, Matthew 1

Two-year plan: Genesis 1-2, Matthew 1:1-11
