01/08/24 Wearing Themselves Out with Sin

READING:

One-year plan: Genesis 18-20, Matthew 6:9-7:6

Two-year plan: Genesis 10, Matthew 4:12-25

———-

It’s a dramatic picture of the power of sin. The wicked men of the city of Sodom wanted to sleep with Lot’s guests, and they were so driven by their urges that even judgment could not stop them. The angels struck these men with blindness after they pulled Lot back into the house, but the men still wearied themselves trying to find the door. That is, even blindness did not give them pause in their sin. It did not bring them to repentance.

I wish I could say that these men were unusual. The truth is, though, that too many of us give in to our own temptations even when we know that sin brings consequences. Sadly, we can caution others about the repercussions of sin even while we’re caught in our own traps of disobedience. We can preach hard that “we reap what we sow” while giving too little attention to how we’re sowing in our own lives. We, too, can wear ourselves out chasing sin that brings no permanent pleasure.

May the Lord grant us grace and perseverance when the world calls us in the wrong direction! May the weight of conviction be so great that we want nothing more than turning away from sin and to God.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you chasing any sin today?

PRAYER: “Help me, God. Every step of the way.”
