———-

The plagues were numerous, and they were severe. Again and again, God made His power known. So potent were the events that parents and grandparents would later tell their children and grandchildren about God’s power and protection. Exodus 12:12 also tells us, though, another reason God sent the plague, with particular reference to the deaths of the firstborn: “I am Yahweh; I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt.” In the end, the Egyptian gods could not protect their followers when the true God executed judgment. The people of Egypt were worshiping gods who were no match for Yahweh; in fact, the Egyptian army would later validate this same point as the Red Sea collapsed over them: “Let’s get away from Israel . . . because the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt!” (Exo 14:25).

Yesterday morning at the church where I was preaching, we watched a video clip about an unreached people group in North Africa. Numbering almost 300,000 people, they have no Christian resources available. Meanwhile, they serve a false god who is powerless against the God of the Bible. My heart broke as I (1) learned of their plight and (2) considered the truth that they have no knowledge of Almighty God. Billions of people around the world cling to gods who also have no power. These same people will face judgment someday—and it is our responsibility to get the Good News to them. They need to know there is only one God who reigns over all.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: How are you carrying out your responsibility to get the gospel to the nations?

PRAYER: “God, You are God. There is no other like You. Amen.”
