——–

Scholars debate what the Roman soldier and his companions at Jesus’ cross meant when they said upon His death, “Truly this man was the Son of God” (Matt 27:54). Some argue that they may have viewed Jesus as a great teacher (even divine), but others view their words as messianic. Based on the miraculous events that surrounded the death of Jesus (e.g., an earthquake crashing, graves opening, and the sanctuary curtain splitting), those who saw the events knew something was different. The One crucified there was no ordinary teacher. Matthew most surely included this passage to remind his readers of who Jesus was (and is).

He’s the Son of God. That truth, frankly, ought to change our lives radically. Because Jesus is who He is, He deserves our full allegiance. Sin should lose its force in our lives because we want to please Him. Access to Him in prayer ought to fill us with wonder.

The Son of God came to us, died for us while we were sinners (Rom 5:8), and welcomes us into His presence. Truly, this is amazing.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you believe Jesus is the Son of God?

PRAYER: “Jesus, You are the Son of God. Amen.”
