07/09/16 Gratitude for His Grace

READING: Psalms 133-139

It’s hard to read Psalm 139 and not simply be amazed at God. Even if you’ve already read the psalm today, read it again — and consider these thoughts about Him as you read:

1. God knows all things. He knows when I sit down and when I rise. He knows when I go out and when I lie down. He knows my every thought. He knows every word I speak before I ever speak it (Psalm 139:1-4).

2. God is everywhere. Wherever I go, He is there. To the heaven or the depths, He is there. From the dawn to the setting of the sun (that is, from the east to the west), He is there. No place I go is hidden from Him; even the darkness is not dark to Him (Psalm 139:7-12).

3. He knew me before He ever created me. His “eyes saw my unformed body,” and “all the days ordained for me were written in [His] book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:16). Knowing all of that, He “knit me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13).

What’s even more amazing to me is that He knew all about me before He ever called me to be His child and then to ministry. That means He knew every wrong thought I’d have, every sinful action I’d take, every arrogant word I’d speak — and still He called me to Himself and then to ministry. He knew I would be a sinner, but still He created me, saved me, and set me apart for His work. All I can do is fall before His feet and weep in gratitude for His grace.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Read Psalm 139 one more time. Meditate on it. Be amazed by God.
  • Spend some time letting the Lord search your heart as the psalmist did in Psalm 139:23-24  (see prayer below).

PRAYER: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

TOMORROW’S READING:  Psalms 140-145
