02/04/18 The Lord Answered

READING: Review of Job 25-42/catch up on reading

“Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind.”

Job 38:1

Today is the Lord’s day. This morning, I will be with our home church, Restoration Church in Wake Forest/Rolesville, NC. My pastor, Trea Brinson, will be proclaiming God’s Word to us, and I’ll have the privilege of hearing and receiving it. A similar process will happen today in congregations all over the world.

I don’t think we understand the miracle and the grace of all this, however. We will hear God’s Word today because God who has chosen to make Himself known to us. Job’s friends spoke to him throughout the book that bears his name, but the whole story became weightier when we read these words: “Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind” (Job 38:1). Nothing in that text, in fact, allows us to read it quickly or flippantly:

  • “the Lord” – the God who established His covenant with Abraham (Gen. 12) and who called His people into being was the same God who spoke with Job
  • “answered Job” – His answer would rebuke Job, but the words were still the words of the Eternal One. The conversation was no longer about God; it was with God.
  • “from the whirlwind” – God made Himself known through a power display – a storm under His control. God moved nature as He spoke to Job.

So, we gather with our congregations today to worship this God. Through His Word and His Spirit, He will make Himself known to us. He’ll convict us of sin. He’ll call us to accountability. He’ll show us the way. He’ll turn our hearts to Him. It’s all amazing. Seriously so – so listen closely.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Through prayer, prepare your heart before you attend worship today.
  • Pay attention to God’s Word as you hear it today. Obey it.

PRAYER: “God, I can’t believe that You speak to us. Give me ears to hear today.”

TOMORROW’S READING:  Exodus 5-9
