05/12/18 In the Shadow of His Wings

READING: 2 Samuel 22-23, Psalms 57

“I will seek refuge in the shadow of your wings.”

Psalm 57:1

Sometimes my life is so busy, and the things on my mind are so numerous, that rest is not sweet. At other times, I allow myself to get so consumed by worries, frustrations, or fears that my heart seems to never stop pounding. To be honest, I’m still learning how to trust God even after being a believer for more than 40 years.

That’s why the psalmist’s image of taking refuge in God is so important to me today. His statement, “I will seek refuge in the shadow of your wingsuntil danger passes” (Psa. 57:1) not only reflects an image of the care of a mother bird for her babies; it also reflects the immense, protective, hard-to-imagine care of a Creator and Redeemer God. Think about it—under whose wings would I want to take refuge other than God’s? His are “wings” that cannot be overshadowed or overtaken, nor can they be defeated or destroyed. We have no reason to worry or fear as long as we’re under the shadow of His wings, no matter what we face. It’s no wonder the psalmist could exclaim even in the midst of his own battles, “My heart is confident, God, my heart is confident.I will sing; I will sing praises” (Psa. 57:7).

My heart worries sometimes, but that’s nothing less than sin. Indeed, it’s a lack of trust in God and His Word. In the shadow of God’s wings, I have no reason for such worry.

ACTION STEPS:

  • If you face difficulties today, rest in the shadow of God’s wings.
  • Let your heart sing with confidence.

PRAYER:  “God, I seek refuge in You today. Wrap your arms around me.’”
