07/24/18 The Word of God

READING: Isaiah 40-42, Psalm 46

“The word of our God remains forever.”

Isaiah 40:8

Life is brief. It’s here, and then it’s gone. We who are strong today will likely not be as strong in days to come, and weakness becomes a daily part of our existence as we press closer to the end. Our material possessions eventually wind up in the garbage dump. Our awards and recognitions carry less significance when we face eternity. Today’s reading reminds us that we are indeed like grass, and all our goodness is like the flower that fades away. None of it lasts forever on its own.

That’s not the case with the Word of God, however. Rather, “the grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever” (Isa. 40:8). It is entirely dependable, and its promises are trustworthy. Regardless of what happens around us – regardless of what comes and goes – God keeps His Word.

That truth reminds me that what we do each day in reading the Word truly does matter. We read the Word not because doing so is just what believers are supposed to do, but because we need the comfort, promises, guidance, and teaching that the Word provides. The world may shift under our feet, but the Word remains true forever.  On that truth we can stand.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Thank God that you have access to His Word.
  • Sing the Lord’s praises today. Pick a favorite song, and let His praises ring.

PRAYER: “Creator God, You are worthy of our praise today. Thank You for making Yourself known to us through Your Word.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Isaiah 43-45, Psalm 80
