04/13/20 Who Would Betray Him?

READING: Judges 7-8, Luke 22

In some ways, God’s grace is seldom more apparent to me than when I see how willing He is to love us when we’re hardly lovable. Actually, we’re sometimes not only not lovable, we’re just unwise. Silly, that is. No matter how much training we may have, sometimes we just don’t get it. Our fallen humanity overshadows everything else—and still God loves us.

At the last Supper, the disciples heard Jesus say that one of them would betray Him. They looked around, apparently not suspecting Judas at that point, but also hesitantly wondering if each of them might be the one. “Surely it is not I, is it?” they asked. Perhaps they one-by-one thought it might be someone else, but their question at least implies some doubt about themselves. In fact, their question reminds us that it’s possible to be at the feet of Jesus and still go in the wrong direction in the heat of the moment.

Next, though, Luke tells us that the disciples were arguing among themselves about “who should be considered the greatest” (Luke 22:24). From wondering who might betray Him to arguing about who’s the greatest—that’s quite a transition. We, though, can be equally fickle. It’s easier to ignore our weaknesses than it is to eradicate our egos.

PRAYER: “Lord, show me how inconsistent I can be in my walk with You.”
