01/29/22 Stop and Consider

READING: Job 35:1-37:24

I don’t think enough about the power of God. I may be wrong, but I suspect I spend so much time thinking about His grace and mercy that I neglect His might. Then, I read words like these from Elihu to Job as he tried to show Job he was in no position to question or confront God:

  • “He draws up the water vapor and then distills it into rain.” (Job 36:27)
  • “See how he spreads the lightning around him and how it lights up the depths of the sea. . . . He fills his hands with lightning bolts and hurls each at its target.” (Job 36:30, 32)
  • “Listen carefully to the thunder of God’s voice as it rolls from his mouth. It rolls across the heavens, and his lightning flashes in every direction. Then comes the roaring of the thunder—the tremendous voice of his majesty. He does not restrain it when he speaks. God’s voice is glorious in the thunder. We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power.” (Job 37:2-5)
  • “Do you understand how he moves the clouds with wonderful perfection and skill?” (Job 37:16)
  • “We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty” (Job 37:23)

The clouds burst with rain. Snow gently but powerfully covers the earth. The wind clears away the clouds. The sun is so bright we cannot look at it. I don’t know about you today, but I need to hear and heed Elihu’s words: “Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God!” (Job 37:14).

PERSONAL REFLECTION: How about you? Do you need to join me in considering God’s power and miracles?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “God, forgive me when I fail to think of Your power.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Job 38:1-40:5
