08/19/22 Even Noah, Daniel, and Job

READING: Ezekiel 14:1-16:63

When God determined to judge His people for their rebellion, He would carry out His plan – and not even the presence of Noah, Daniel, and Job in that country would make a difference (Ezek 14:12-14). They could save themselves by their righteousness, but their presence would not stay God’s judgment on the others. Even their own sons and daughters would not survive.

This illustration (that perhaps seems strange to us) was God’s way of saying, “Even righteous people cannot save the city now.” Jeremiah had reported something similar when God said through him, “Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people” (Jer 15:1). At least at this point in the history of the Hebrews, judgment was sure. God may have offered to spare Sodom and Gomorrah if a remnant of ten faithful people were found there (Gen 18), but He made no such commitment this time.

I am reminded again today that God is God, and He is the One who judges. He is always right, both in the timing and severity of judgment. Our calling today—and our privilege because of His love—is to proclaim His Word to a rebellious world that they might turn to Him before He sends judgment.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Who in your life needs to turn to the Lord?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, You are the One who judges with perfection. While You extend grace, help us to be faithful evangelists.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Ezekiel 17:1-19:14
