01/18/23 Verbs

READING: Genesis 50, Exodus 1-3

Verbs have caught my attention today. In particular, the recurrent verbs in today’s reading that describe what God did for His people have deepened my appreciation for His intimate, personal, relational heart. Take note of, for example, these strings of verbs:

  • “God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the Israelites, and God knew.” (Exo 2:24-25)
  • “I [God] have observed the misery of my people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out because of their oppressors. I know about their sufferings, and I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them from that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.” (Exo 3:7-8)
  • “I have paid close attention to you and to what has been done to you in Egypt. And I have promised you that I will bring you up from the misery of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.” (Exo 3:16-17)

There are many more examples, but these “piled up” verbs remind me just how much God knows us and steps into our lives. He truly is the active, living, great I AM!

PERSONAL REFLECTION: What is God doing in your life today?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, thank You for being so active in our lives.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Exodus 4-8
