06/19/23 Hope

READING: Job 16-22

We all need hope. Our world is crazy and chaotic. It feels like the enemy continues to win, even though we know the God-glorifying end of the story. Health issues sometimes erupt. Age takes its toll on us. At the risk of being morbid, I cannot ignore the truth that death awaits at some point. We really do need hope.

In today’s reading, Job spoke of seeing his Redeemer after death (Job 19:25-26). It is not clear that Job had developed a full theology of bodily resurrection, but the evidence of his hope is real nonetheless. He would see God someday, and he longed for that day in the present. In that day, according to one writer, “Job would no longer be like a stranger to God, for God would be on his side.”*

The New Testament, of course, unpacks the promise of resurrection for Christ-followers. No matter what we face today—even if it’s death—we will be with our Redeemer. Victory will be real.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you need hope today?
