Here is what God promised Solomon: “I will give you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has never been anyone like you before and never will be again” (1 Kgs 3:12). It was quite a promise, actually, evidenced quickly in these chapters with Solomon’s wisdom in deciding the issue between the two prostitutes and then in setting up his government. The long summary statement at the end of 1 Kings 4, though, dramatically shows the product of God’s promise:

“God gave Solomon wisdom, very great insight, and understanding as vast as the sand on the seashore.Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone—wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, sons of Mahol. His reputation extended to all the surrounding nations.Solomon spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs numbered 1,005.He spoke about trees, from the cedar in Lebanon to the hyssop growing out of the wall. He also spoke about animals, birds, reptiles, and fish. Emissaries of all peoples, sent by every king on earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom.” (1 Kgs 4:29-34)

Clearly, Solomon’s wisdom was without parallel. God keeps His promises – and we’re wise to have complete confidence in His faithfulness.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you trust God to keep His word?

PRAYER: “Father, I praise You for Your faithfulness.”
