01/20/16 Staff vs. Staff

READING: Exodus 7-9

The enemy we face is supernatural, but he’s not God. He is powerful, but he is no match for God. No way. Not a threat to Him. Not even close.

We forget these simple truths to our peril.

The story of God’s judgment on Egypt in today’s reading makes clear God’s supremacy over the enemy. Three times in the narrative, the magicians of Egypt are able to duplicate what God did — Aaron’s rod becoming a snake, the Nile turning to blood, and the frogs coming from the water. Scholars question whether their powers were just a trick or demonic forces, but the truth remains the same either way: even when they seemed powerful, they were no match for God.

The first event, for example, resounds with the power of God over the magicians:

"But then Pharaoh called the wise men and sorcerers—the magicians of Egypt, and they also did the same thing by their occult practices. Each one threw down his staff, and it became a serpent. But Aaron’s staff swallowed their staffs.” (Exo. 7:11-12)

Later, the magicians recognized the “finger of God” when they could not duplicate the plague of gnats (Exo. 8:19). Then, they could not even stand before Moses because they themselves were plagued with boils (Exo. 9:11). They could not stop the judgment of God on them and their nation.

This is actually good news for us. Despite how powerful the enemy may seem in our lives, he cannot defeat God. Period.

ACTION STEPS: Consider these steps today:

  • Take time to thank God for the victory He gives you.
  • When the enemy attacks you today — and it’s tempting to see him as mighty — remember that you serve the Almighty.
  • If it appears the enemy is winning in the life of one of your friends or loved ones, cling tightly to the power of God. Trust Him as you pray for others.

PRAYER: “Father, You are more powerful than all the powers. Help me to remember that truth today.”
